Nidra Chanderi saree for Diwali from House of Vandy

Diwali Outfit Ideas 2026: 5 Festive Looks in Handloom & Chanderi

Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026 this year. If you're anything like us, the outfit question starts weeks before the diyas come out. What do you wear to the family puja, the cousin's card party, the office celebration, and the Lakshmi Puja evening, without buying five new outfits?

In Kerala, Diwali has always been a gentler festival than it is up north. Lamps, sweets, a little firework noise, a visit to the temple. That's exactly why handloom and Chanderi work so well for it: they look festive without feeling like a costume, and they breathe in our October and November humidity. Here are five Diwali looks from our Festive Edits, with notes on when each one works best.

1. The classic: a Chanderi saree for Lakshmi Puja

For the main evening, nothing beats a saree. The Nidra Saree is made from soft Mul Chanderi, so it drapes fluidly and stays light even when you're sitting through a long puja on the floor. Pair it with a contrasting blouse rather than a matching one. A printed blouse from our blouse edit makes the saree feel new again, even if you've worn it before.

Finish with: a kundan haaram such as the Ponnambal Kundan & Pearl Haaram, which comes with matching jhumkas. One statement piece is enough with a saree this graceful.

2. The easy-elegant: a Dhavani set

A dhavani (half-saree) gives you all the drama of a saree with far less fuss. That matters when you're running between the kitchen, the rangoli and the guests. The Mathangi Dhavani Set pairs a tailored floral-printed blouse with a flowing skirt and drape, so the whole look is styled for you.

Best for: younger family members, or anyone who wants to look festive and still move freely all evening.

3. The relaxed festive: a dress with a Chanderi overlay

Not every Diwali gathering calls for six yards. For a daytime visit to relatives or a smaller dinner at home, try the Kutty Poovu Festive Set. It's a soft mul cotton dress with a sheer Chanderi overlay, and the delicate details read festive without being loud. Add gold-tone earrings and you're done.

4. The statement: a cowl suit for the party

The Diwali card party is where you can be a little bolder. The Green & Blue Cowl Suit has a graceful cowl drape that flatters most body types. The jewel tones also photograph beautifully under fairy lights and diya glow. Keep the jewellery minimal and let the drape do the talking.

5. The modern twist: a skirt and top set

If sarees aren't your thing, a coordinated skirt and top set gives you a festive silhouette that's easy to wear. The Kattam Skirt & Top Set pairs a classic checked pattern on an off-white base with delicate red floral motifs. It's traditional enough for the family puja and fresh enough for the party after.

Don't forget the men

For men, a festive kurta or a printed linen shirt with a mundu is the Kerala way to do Diwali. The Mathangi Kurta is made from tissue fabric with a subtle festive sheen. For something more relaxed, the Kattam Shirt in linen pairs well with the black-and-gold Nidra Mundu.

Three Diwali styling tips

  • Choose breathable fabrics. Between oil lamps, a crowded house and Kerala's post-monsoon humidity, Chanderi, mul cotton and linen will keep you far more comfortable than synthetic georgette.
  • Keep a safe distance from diyas. Flowing dupattas and loose pallus are beautiful, but pin them securely when you're lighting lamps or bursting crackers.
  • Plan one statement piece. Pick either a bold necklace or bold earrings, not both. Our guide to Kemp, Kundan and Dhokra jewellery will help you choose.
