Sandalwood and Turmeric Oil

Why We Still Believe in Ayurvedic Skincare in an Ingredient-List World

Skin & Ritual · The House of Vandy Journal

Open any skincare app today and you'll be handed a vocabulary lesson before you're handed a product: niacinamide, bakuchiol, tranexamic acid, a percentage next to each one like a nutrition label. There's a real usefulness to that clarity. But there's also a quieter tradition that never needed the ingredient list to prove itself, because it was never trying to win an argument — it was trying to work, consistently, for a few thousand years running.

We still believe in that tradition. Not instead of science, but alongside it.

What Gets Lost in Translation

Ayurveda doesn't isolate a single molecule and market it. Sandalwood, turmeric, jojoba, rose — these are whole botanicals, and they arrive with dozens of compounds working together instead of one hero ingredient carrying the formula alone. That's harder to put on a label. It's also, we'd argue, harder to fake with a dupe. You can't 1:1 copy "an oil that's been formulated the same way for generations" the way you can copy a percentage on a bottle.

“You can't 1:1 copy a tradition the way you can copy a percentage on a bottle.”

There's also the matter of ritual, which the ingredient-list era tends to skip past entirely. Ayurvedic body oils were never meant to be patted on in ten seconds between skincare steps. They're meant to be massaged in, warm, with time given to the process — abhyanga, self-oil-massage, is as much a nervous-system practice as a skin one. A sandalwood and turmeric oil isn't just treating pigmentation; the five minutes you spend applying it is doing something too.

Old Formulas, Honestly Sourced

None of this is an argument for nostalgia over efficacy. Our actives — sandalwood and turmeric for healing, rose and geranium for hydration, multani mitti for oil control — are chosen because they've been independently shown to do what tradition always claimed, not just because they sound ancestral. We'd rather a formula work quietly for a decade than trend for a month.
