Kerala's wedding season is here. Between November and February, many of us have back-to-back invitations: a cousin's morning muhurtham, a colleague's church wedding, a friend's reception in a hotel ballroom. Each one comes with the same question: what do I wear?
Kerala weddings are famously elegant and understated compared with many other parts of India. Gold, cream, soft colour and good fabric matter more than heavy embellishment. Here is our guide to dressing well as a wedding guest in Kerala, and what to avoid.
First, know the kind of wedding
- Hindu weddings are often held in the morning at an auditorium or temple, with a ceremony timed to an auspicious muhurtham. They tend to be short, so the outfit should be comfortable but polished.
- Christian weddings usually begin with a church service, so modest necklines and covered shoulders are a respectful choice. A reception often follows later in the day.
- Muslim weddings generally call for modest, full-coverage outfits. A dupatta or saree pallu that can cover the head is useful to have.
- Receptions, whatever the community, are the place to be a little more dressed up: richer colours, statement jewellery, a touch of shimmer.
Women: the saree is never wrong
A saree is the safest and most graceful choice for almost any Kerala wedding. For a morning ceremony, a lightweight Chanderi or mul cotton saree keeps you comfortable in the heat. The Mathangi Saree is a premium Chanderi saree with an elegant hibiscus print. It's festive enough for a wedding but won't compete with the bride. The Manjari Screen-Print Saree, in mul cotton with screen-printed flowers and golden polka dots, is lovely for daytime functions.
Women: a kurta set when you'd rather not drape
If you'll be on your feet all day, or travelling straight from work, a well-cut kurta set is just as appropriate. The Madhavi Kurta Set is made from Chanderi with a timeless silhouette, and it looks right at both a church service and a reception. Browse more options in our kurta edit.
Jewellery: temple and kemp pieces shine here
Kerala weddings are where traditional jewellery really comes into its own. A kemp or temple-style choker instantly makes a simple saree wedding-ready:
- The Thamara Valli Choker Set has lotus-vine clusters in ruby-red and emerald-green kemp stones.
- The Aanapadam Temple Choker Set features a row of ceremonial elephants, a classic Kerala motif.
- The Kemp Stone Drop Earrings are a quieter option if you're wearing a statement necklace.

Men: mundu, veshti or a good linen shirt
For a Hindu wedding, a cream or off-white mundu with a kasavu border and a crisp shirt is the classic Kerala look. A handloom veshti such as the Manga Veshti is a refined upgrade. For receptions and church weddings, a festive linen shirt like the Chembarathi Shirt works well with trousers or a mundu. Finish with a pair of handcrafted Svarnika Mojaris, which are easier to slip off at the temple or mandapam than laced shoes. Our veshti styling guide has more ideas.
What to avoid as a wedding guest
- Bridal colours head to toe. Heavy red-and-gold silk is usually the bride's territory. Choose softer tones or a lighter weave.
- All-black or all-white outfits can be read as mourning colours by some families. A black saree with a gold border is fine; a plain black outfit is best saved for another day.
- Very revealing cuts at a temple or church ceremony. Save the backless blouse for the reception.
- Synthetic fabrics in the heat. Morning weddings in Kerala can be warm and crowded. Natural fabrics will keep you fresh in photos all day.
- Uncomfortable footwear. You may need to remove your shoes, sit on the floor, or stand for a long time in the sadya queue.
