Thamara Valli kemp choker necklace

Which Necklace for Which Neckline? A Simple Styling Guide

Ever put on a beautiful necklace and felt it just looked wrong with your outfit? It probably wasn't the necklace. It was the neckline. The space between your collarbone and the edge of your blouse or dress acts like a frame, and some necklaces fit some frames much better than others.

Here's a simple cheat-sheet for matching necklaces to necklines, with pieces from our Necklaces collection for each one.

The one rule to remember

Echo the shape, or fill the space. A necklace either follows the line of your neckline (a V-pendant with a V-neck) or sits neatly in the open space above it (a choker with a strapless top). If the necklace clashes with the neckline, or disappears under it, it will look awkward.

V-neck: a pendant that follows the line

A V-neck naturally points downward, so choose a necklace that does the same. A pendant or a necklace that tapers to a point is ideal. Make sure it sits just above the point of the V, not on top of the fabric.

Try: the Suryakiran Brass Necklace, a radiating sun motif hand-cast in brass using the Dhokra technique.

Round or crew neck: a statement collar or a short chain

With a round neckline, you have two good options. Choose a short, bold necklace that sits just above the neckline, like a collar, or a dainty chain that sits close to the collarbone. Avoid medium-length necklaces that land right on the edge of the fabric.

Try: the Vedika Dhokra Necklace, which has a quiet, grounded presence that works beautifully above a simple cotton top.

Boat neck and high neck: go long, or skip it

High and boat necklines cover most of the collarbone area, so short necklaces get lost. Either choose a long necklace that falls well below the neckline, or skip the necklace and wear statement earrings instead.

Try: a long haaram like the Ponnambal Kundan & Pearl Haaram, a traditional long, layered necklace worn low across the chest. It looks stunning over a high-neck saree blouse.

Sweetheart, strapless and off-shoulder: the choker's moment

Open necklines leave the whole neck and collarbone bare, which is the perfect canvas for a choker. It fills the space without competing with the neckline.

Try: the Maharani Bloom Choker Set, with strands of miniature pearls meeting at a floral kundan pendant. For a more traditional look, the Thalichaarthu Heritage Choker is inspired by the thali-tying ceremony at the heart of Kerala and Tamil weddings.

Square neck: angles and layers

A square neckline has strong straight lines, so it pairs well with geometric pieces or a short layered look. Rounded collar necklaces also soften the angles nicely.

Try: the Geometric Delight Brass Necklace, which matches the neckline's clean lines.

Halter neck: keep it minimal

A halter already draws the eye up to your neck and shoulders, so a heavy necklace can feel crowded. Skip the necklace and wear statement earrings, or choose a very fine chain.

Try it with: the halter-neck Chembarathi Blouse, paired with bold earrings from our earrings edit.

Collared shirts and kurtas

With a collar, either wear a short necklace tucked just under the collar with the top button open, or go long with a pendant that falls below the placket. Fabric and charm necklaces look especially good with cotton shirts and kurtas.

Try: the Golden Leaf Charm Necklace, an easy, everyday piece with a nature-inspired pendant.
