Fort Kochi is best explored slowly, on foot, with time for a coffee and a wrong turn or two. It's a small peninsula, but it packs in centuries of Portuguese, Dutch, British, Jewish and Kerala history, plus some of the most photogenic streets in South India. If you only have one day, this walking itinerary covers the highlights without rushing. It ends with sunset at the Chinese fishing nets.
Tip: wear comfortable shoes and breathable clothes. Fort Kochi is warm and humid for most of the year, and you'll be walking a lot. There's more on what to wear at the end of this guide.
Morning (8 am – 11 am): the waterfront and the old churches
Getting there: If you're staying on the Ernakulam side, the ferry across the backwaters is the most scenic way to arrive. It's a lovely start to the day.
- Chinese fishing nets. Start early at the beach-side promenade, when the fishermen are hauling in the giant cantilevered nets. It's the most iconic sight in Kochi, and the morning light is gentler for photos.
- St. Francis Church. A short walk inland brings you to one of the oldest European-built churches in India. Vasco da Gama was originally buried here before his remains were taken back to Portugal.
- Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica. Just a few minutes away, with a bright, ornate interior that's a beautiful contrast to St. Francis Church.
- The Dutch Cemetery. Usually viewed from outside the gates, it's a quiet, atmospheric corner near the beach.
Late morning (11 am – 1 pm): the heritage lanes
Wander along Princess Street and Burgher Street, where colonial-era bungalows have become cafés, art spaces and boutiques. This is the best part of Fort Kochi to simply walk without a plan.
Stop by House of Vandy at Lila Cafe on Ridsdale Road. It's our biggest store and sustainable lifestyle space, with handloom clothing, artisan jewellery, home décor and gifts made by small makers from Kerala and across India. It's a good place to cool off, and to pick up something more meaningful than a fridge magnet. For more shopping ideas, see our guide to the top souvenir and handicraft shops in Fort Kochi.
Lunch (1 pm – 2:30 pm)
Fort Kochi is full of cafés and seafood restaurants. Try a Kerala meal with appam and stew, or the catch of the day. Take your time: the early afternoon is the hottest part of the day, so it's a good moment to sit somewhere shaded.
Afternoon (2:30 pm – 5 pm): Mattancherry and Jew Town
Take a short auto-rickshaw ride to Mattancherry, a couple of kilometres away.
- Mattancherry Palace (the Dutch Palace). It's famous for its Kerala murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana. The palace is usually closed on Fridays, so plan around that.
- Jew Town and the Paradesi Synagogue. Built in 1568, it's one of the oldest active synagogues in the Commonwealth, known for its hand-painted Chinese floor tiles. It closes for a long midday break and on several days of the week, including Fridays and Saturdays, so check the timings before you go.
- The spice market. The lanes around Jew Town still smell of pepper, cardamom and ginger. It's a reminder of why traders came to Kochi in the first place.
Evening (5 pm onwards): sunset at the nets
Head back to the Fort Kochi waterfront for sunset. The fishing nets silhouetted against an orange sky are the classic end to the day. Afterwards, the beach promenade is lively with families, snack stalls and fresh seafood.
What to wear for a day in Fort Kochi
You'll be walking, visiting churches, and sitting in cafés in serious humidity. Dress for comfort and respect:
- Choose loose, breathable fabrics. Cotton and linen are best. A flowing kaftan like our Dark Blue-Neck Embroidered Yellow Kaftan is cool, covers your shoulders for church visits, and looks great in photos.
- Try a co-ord set. Matching sets such as the Blue Leaf Print Co-ord Set look put-together with zero effort.
- Wear easy-off footwear. You may need to remove your shoes at some sites. Flat Sattva Mojaris are comfortable for walking and slip off in seconds.
- Carry a light scarf or stole to cover your shoulders at religious sites.
